OK all you Turkeynecks gather round…
Sydney’s most obnoxious club night, Solid Gold Hell is on again this Saturday at the Sly Fox, playing loud, lewd, lascivious junk called rock ‘n’ roll, garage, soul, punk, exotica and whatever else tickles your fancy till 3am.
Staffing the DJ decks this week will be Angie Von Helle and Danger Coolidge from UNBELIEVABLY Bad as well as SGH’s in-house disc-spinners Cutthroat and Demonika.
In addition to the tunes, the big screen will be flashing a cornucopia of antique Scopitone films (kinda like a 16mm music video jukebox) courtesy of the nostalgia nuts at Mojo Music.
All it’ll cost ya is nothing, nada, nix, zilch, zip, sweet FA, etc.
Solid Gold Hell is on 9pm ’til 3am this Saturday, September 11th at the Sly Fox, Enmore

17 years after the death of lead singer GG Allin, his original band, The Murder Junkies bring their brand of dirty gutter punk to Australia for the first time. With GG’s brother Merle Allin (bass) and original drummer Dino Sex at the helm, these guys have been going strong for over 20 years, conquering Europe and the US many times over.
Known for their crazy on stage antics and brutal and sometimes comical lyrical themes, The Murder Junkies have a reputation that cannot be ignored. This October, they’ll be visiting Australian shores for the first (and possibly only) time, so make sure you catch them destroy venues all over the country while you still can.
You’ve heard the stories and seen the movie, now see the band behind the most notorious man in music history.

Like nothing ever, Japan’s incomparable noise ninjas The Boredoms will return to Australia in October for two shows only.
Fifteen years after their one and only Australian tour with Regurgitator, Yamataka EYE and the gang are back to blow head gaskets with a crazy seven-drummer assault, Saturday October 9th at The Forum, Melbourne as part of the Melbourne International Arts Festival, and Monday 11th at The Metro, Sydney.

Unlike everything never, Boredoms will leave the breath from the room. Boredoms transform tension within secluded regions of a brain. Living through a series of experiences that venture into the light EYE, Yoshimi and many will fill the invisible holes with their coming 7-drummer sonic constructions in Australia. Be one of a kind…
The conundrum of boredoms then becomes to understand it, or remediate it, or to deny it is impossible… an ascent into the incomprehensible.
DATES:
Saturday 9th October – Beck’s Bar, The Forum, Melbourne Festival [w/ Kes Band, Bum Creek]
Monday 11th October – Metro, Sydney [supports TBA]

Help get Circle Pit out of the damn country…

The United State of America, a great country that has given the world the gifts of baseball, Blue Oyster Cult, break-dancing, Coke-a-Cola, “freedom”, the atom bomb and Hardcore Punk. Finally our great southern land gets to return the gift with Circle Pit embarking on their maiden tour of the USA later this year.
Sunday August 1st at the Sandringham Hotel, come show your support, say g’bye and raise some much needed funds for Circle Pit’s USA tour.
Supports acts are the mutant psychedelic punk of Naked On The Vague, the no-frills everyman’s rawk of Bed Wettin’ Bad Boys, and the provoking yet highly danceable minimal/maximal disco of Dominic Talarico. Also playing tunes before, after and between the acts is DJ Owen Penglis.
NOTE: This show is an early start / early finish so don’t dilly-dally!

Blood, the full-length debut from San Diego psychos Sirhan Sirhan, is 11 tracks of discordant punk and chaotic hard rock fired like bullets into a politician’s brain by a mad assassin.
After hearing it for the first time UB.com’s Danger Coolidge became possessed by a desperate need to warn as many people as possible, so he interviewed bass maniac Mike Johnston. Unfortunately, the band split up a few months later and the interview was left on the scrapheap. Till now…

Sirhan Sirhan: was he Bobby Kennedy’s killer or the victim of the most blatant case of mind control ever carried out? “I forget everything” seems a fairly convenient defence, yet out of all the late-sixties political assassinations that one seems to be the most suspicious (destroyed guns, substituted bullets, lost tapes of witness testimony, burned photographs, etc…), not to mention just plain bizarre.
Brainwashed!!! As you say, there are way too many suspicious events involved in that entire case. There are photos of two CIA agents in attendance that were not supposed to be there. Oddly enough, the same two guys were seen at the JFK assassination. Bullets allegedly came from the front and from behind Bobby Kennedy. The list of unanswered questions goes on and on. That’s par for the U.S. government course with many events in U.S. history.
Did you decide to call the band Sirhan Sirhan in support of the man, or did you just think that was a good name to freak people out?
A little of both. We’re not a political band by any stretch of the imagination but we did like the idea of raising awareness and getting folks to ask questions, especially the younger people. It’s amazing how many people ask what Sirhan Sirhan means. So in that regard it’s good to make people aware of a hugely important event in our history as well as getting them to think about conspiracies and how corrupt our government really is. Getting people to not just take “Linda the news anchor’s” word for everything and think for themselves is a good thing. And the freak-out factor was a plus.
The three members are from the Midwest and all met in San Diego. How does that work? Do all you guys have a similar mindset?
Absolutely!! The chemistry between the three of us is great. With having similar backgrounds and work ethic a lot of aspects of productivity in this band seem effortless compared to other projects we’ve been involved in. We all decided we wanted to make some noise and poof! Our baby was born.
The band started in 2005. Was there a lot of inspiring stuff going on in San Diego at the time that made you want to be a part of it?
I think it was the opposite of inspiring things going on that led us to this. Not just in San Diego, but in many areas there was a lack of balls-out, disgusting, loud rock with the “I don’t give a fuck” attitude behind it. We were all in other bands at the time that were nothing like Sirhan. It was mutual across the board that it was time to kick some folks in the taint.
How would you describe the sound of Blood and how does it differ from the initial blast that was the S/T EP?
On the EP we just wanted a raw, loud, plug-in-and-play type recording. Not freak out too much on the production of it. With “Blood” we wanted that same vibe only louder and fuller. The EP was done in a day. I think we had “Blood” recorded in just under two weeks. We did the whole record basically live on two-inch tape, which was a blast. There was no stopping and starting with punch-ins and shit. If we fucked up we started the whole song over. What you hear on “Blood” is what your gonna get at a live show. Balls-out, loud, melt-your-face-off rock!!
Blood was produced by Joby from The Bronx. What do you think he helped bring to the recording?
Joby is a great dude and a good friend of ours. We actually met [Bronx drummer] Jorma [Vik] at a show we played in San Diego with 400 Blows. Jorma caught our set and dug it. A week or so later The Bronx asked us to play with them in L.A. and that’s where we met Joby. I guess Joby liked what he heard and got a hold of Anodyne Records and asked about producing our record. We are all Bronx fans and were stoked on the idea, so it happened. Joby helped a lot, especially in pre-production. He had a lot of ideas that helped tighten up our songs. He was great at lighting a fire under Alex [Organ]’s ass and really tightened up his drumming. We were all on the same page as far as guitar/bass tones go too, which was great.
Blood won Best Hard Rock Album at the 2008 San Diego Music Awards – is this a big deal to you? Awards for music always seem like total bullshit since art is so subjective, but then, I’ve never won anything so I would say that.
It was cool to win that award. We work really hard in this band so to be recognised for that was cool. I wouldn’t say it’s a make or break thing by any means but it was pretty cool – a decent thing to throw on the resume.

The Holy Soul would like to make you aware that they are playing their first Sydney headline show of the year tonight (Thursday July 22nd) at Oxford Art Factory with support from The Stabs and The Maladies.

Cue band blurb…
The last 12 months have been busy for The Holy Soul, with the band embarking on its first Asian tour (taking in Malaysia and Taiwan, performing alongside Mick Turner, Ghost, Carsick Cars and Tricky), playing as a backing band for Pere Ubu singer David Thomas and embarking on a string of shows with the likes of Kim Salmon & the Surrealists and The Drones.
Late last year also saw the release of the band’s acclaimed second LP, Damn You, Ra on Russell Hopkinson’s Illustrious Artists label. The record was the first to feature band members Jon Hunter (guitar) and Kate Wilson (drums), and it was reviewed extremely enthusiastically. Ra also included contributions from Ralph Carney (Jonathan Richman, Tom Waits), Rui Pereira (ex-Drones) and Loene Carmen.
Following the O.A.F. show, the band will prep the release of a live, improvisational LP with ex-Can singer, Damo Suzuki. The LP was recorded in Melbourne in 2008.
The Holy Soul is now working on a follow up to Damn You, Ra.
The Holy Soul play Oxford Art Factory, Oxford Street, Darlo tonight (Thursday July 22nd) with support from The Stabs and The Maladies.
